Julie Heffernan

Self-Portrait as Broken Home, 2008, Oil on canvas, 67 x 57 inches

I just was reminded of the work of Julie Heffernan, who I heard speak as a visiting artist at Ball State (my undergrad alma mater) a few years ago. Her work is a beautiful and disturbing lucid dream. See an interview with her here, and more work here and here.

one to watch (i feel like a news agency when i say that)

The personal, touching and hilarious world of one Laura Park.

editorialize

"Remembering Dacia" Baltimore Sun. Illustrator: Penelope Dullaghan

Editorial Illustration = Illustration designed specifically for an existing article.

Shannon Associates: a little collection of diverse editorial approaches gathered together by this agency.
New York Times Book Review
The New Yorker
I seem biased toward the Big Apple, but these are two publications that put great emphasis on illustrative components.

Check out the print versions of the local Stranger or Seattle Weekly, as well, for a continuous commitment to interesting visual reflections on text. Other good print sources of editorial illustration: Rolling Stone, Utne Reader, Time, etc.
